Hi, I’m Rune, former COO at Aula 👋

Knowing how a place will support your personal development - growing into who you wish to become - is one of the most important things when picking out where to work. Here, I’ve shared an introduction to how we do it at Aula to give you a sense of whether this is an organisation you’d like to be part of.

To give you a bit of background, my own motivation for building our framework comes from experience at other places. I spent a summer working for a company that is well-known for excelling at personal development: full of brilliant people, minutely detailed career ladders, tons of training sessions and a widely shared model for giving feedback.

All great things. However, I left thinking that if I were ever to build an organisation, it could be done even better. There would be more focus on creating:

• A bold vision for each team member (think ‘I want to be Prime Minister’), even if that vision ultimately leads team members out of the organisation.
• A ‘workhorse model’ with frequent check-ins for achieving that vision. A structured process that formalises the development rather than relying on ad-hoc conversations. I like to think of our personal development process as a ‘product’ that needs constant iteration and careful thought.

At Aula, we’ve decided to put this into action using 3 elements:

• A clearly defined vision (‘What does the pinnacle of my career look like?’)
• Time-bound missions (‘Where will Aula take me?’)
• Quarterly OKRs (‘What will get us there?’)

These elements are combined with a couple of underlying principles that guide how we work with each other:

• Feedback is oxygen for excellence. Constant, thoughtful feedback leads to better work, better people, and more trusting relationships. We invest more time in giving each other honest and caring feedback than any other organisation I’ve come across.
